Submission Information
We are calling for papers from researchers working in the fields of Applied Linguistics and Language Education interested in methodologies and applications of research syntheses. By "research synthesis", we refer to both "systematic" and "traditional" research synthesis. Types of research synthesis we focus on include:
- Critical review
- Meta-analysis
- Methodological review
- Mixed review
- Narrative review
- Overview
- Qualitative research synthesis
- Research agenda
- Research into practice
- Scoping review
- State-of-the-art review
- Systematic literature review
We are particularly interested in papers which (1) advance our methodological understandings of conducting various types of research synthesis in Applied Linguistics and Language Education and/or (2) discuss ways research synthesis inform practice and policy making.
Examples of research synthesis:
- Submissions which present synthesised findings on a particular research topic with clearly reported synthesis methodologies
Methodologies of research synthesis:
- Methodological frameworks and orientations of conducting research synthesis;
- Conducting research synthesis using technologies;
- Interdisciplinary methodological approaches to conducting research synthesis;
- Specific methodological stages of conducting research synthesis (e.g., search strategy, data extraction, data synthesis);
- Specific methodological issues when conducting research synthesis (e.g., resolving disagreement, publication bias);
- Advice for novice researchers to conduct research synthesis (e.g., a master's student conducting research synthesis)
Application of research synthesis:
- Use of research synthesis techniques on specific topics in Applied Linguistics and Language Education;
- Practitioners' and policymakers' experiences of using research synthesis to inform practice;
- Representation of synthesised findings and implications which appeals to not only researchers but practitioners (e.g., data visualisation strategies);
- Roles of research synthesis in bridging the research-practice divide (e.g., to inform emergency online learning during COVID-19)
Note: The materials for presentation can be drawn from an ongoing or completed research synthesis on any topic of interest to the Applied Linguistics and Language Education communities.
Presentation Format
Duration of each presentation session: 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation & 10 minutes for Q&A)
